ADHD

Do You Understand ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition. It is not simply “restlessness” or “daydreaming,” but a disorder involving brain regulation of attention, impulse control, and executive functioning. Patients may experience persistent difficulties with focus, hyperactivity, or impulsive behaviors that affect school, work, and relationships.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Inattention: easily distracted, difficulty completing tasks, forgetfulness.
  • Hyperactivity: restlessness, excessive talking, difficulty staying still.
  • Impulsivity: interrupting others, impatience, difficulty waiting.

According to the World Health Organization and international studies, ADHD affects approximately 5–7% of children worldwide and 2–5% of adults. This shows ADHD is not only a childhood condition—many individuals continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. ADHD impacts not only personal performance but also family dynamics, education, and society at large.

Local studies in Hong Kong and elsewhere indicate rising diagnosis rates, partly due to increased awareness. However, many patients still delay seeking help because of stigma or misconceptions that ADHD is “just being inattentive.”

Effective approaches include:

  • Medication: stimulants or non-stimulants that improve focus and impulse control.
  • Psychotherapy: such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which teaches coping strategies.
  • Behavioral training: structured routines to enhance self-management.
  • Family and school support: fostering understanding and practical assistance in daily life.

If you or someone close to you experiences persistent difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity, do not ignore these warning signs of ADHD. ADHD is not a sign of weakness—it is a medical condition that requires understanding and treatment. Seeking professional help early is the first step toward recovery and improved quality of life.
