Depression Risk Factors Self-Check List

Depression (Major Depressive Disorder – MDD) develops from a combination of biological, psychological, and social influences. While having one or more of these risk factors does not mean you will definitely develop depression, being aware of them can help you recognize when to seek support early.

Review the checklist below and see if any apply to your situation (you may select more than one).

Biological Factors

  • A close family member (parent, sibling) has experienced depression or another mood disorder
  • History of major physical illnesses (e.g., thyroid disease, diabetes, heart disease)
  • Long-term use of medications that may affect mood (such as certain blood pressure drugs or steroids)
  • Past serious brain injury or neurological disorder

Psychological Factors

  • Personality traits such as excessive self-criticism, perfectionism, or low self-confidence
  • Childhood experiences of emotional neglect, abuse, or loss of a primary caregiver
  • Tendency to avoid or suppress emotions when under stress
  • Frequent rumination on negative events or persistent self-blame

Social Factors

  • Recent major life changes (bereavement, divorce, unemployment, relocation, etc.)
  • Lack of a stable support network, feeling isolated or helpless
  • Prolonged exposure to high-stress environments (workplace, school, or family)
  • Unstable living conditions (financial difficulties, housing insecurity, etc.)

If several of these factors apply to you, it does not mean you will certainly develop depression—but it does suggest you may be at higher risk. Awareness is the first step. If you notice persistent low mood, loss of interest, or other warning signs, consider reaching out to a mental health professional. Early support can make a significant difference in recovery.
